BEST AREAS IN MONACO FOR FAMILIES

Choosing where to live in Monaco as a family is primarily a logistical decision. District character, apartment size and format, school access, building services and daily circulation patterns all interact in ways that matter more once children are part of the equation. This guide covers the districts families compare most seriously and the practical factors that tend to drive the decision.

FONTVIEILLE

Fontvieille is the district most consistently preferred by families with young children. It is among Monaco’s most residential neighbourhoods: quieter than Monte-Carlo, less exposed to tourist and event traffic than the port area, and organised around a functioning marina quarter with supermarkets, pharmacies and everyday services within easy reach on foot.

Apartment formats in Fontvieille also tend toward larger floor plans relative to price, which matters for families who need three, four or five bedrooms. The district is not the most central in Monaco, but for a family whose daily rhythm revolves around school runs, after-school activities and household logistics rather than proximity to designer shopping or the Carré d’Or, that is rarely a drawback.

LARVOTTO

Larvotto runs along Monaco’s main seafront and combines a strong residential profile with proximity to the beach, which for families with older children can be a deciding factor. The building stock includes a mix of established addresses and newer residences, and the overall atmosphere is more open and coastal than the denser central districts. As Monaco’s most expensive neighbourhood, it is highly sought-after not only for its beach access, but its neighbourhood feel, greenery, and socially oriented lifestyle.

The relevant question for families considering Larvotto is whether the lifestyle fit justifies the waterfront premium relative to what the same budget delivers elsewhere. Larvotto is also ideal for families with children attending the International School of Monaco or frequenting the Monte Carlo Country Club.

MONTE-CARLO & THE CARRÉ D'OR

Monte-Carlo and the Carré d’Or are not the obvious first choice for families with young children, but they are not automatically wrong either. Households who value being at the centre of Monaco’s commercial, cultural and social infrastructure, with restaurants, retail and services immediately accessible on foot, sometimes find that the energy and convenience of these districts outweighs the higher price per square metre and more urban character.

The more important consideration is apartment format. Large family apartments in Monte-Carlo and the Carré d’Or exist but represent a smaller share of available stock than in Fontvieille or Larvotto.

LA ROUSSE - SAINT ROMAN

La Rousse – Saint Roman sits at the eastern edge of the Principality and has a predominantly residential character with strong sea views from upper floors, good building stock and a somewhat lower profile than the more central neighbourhoods. It provides easy access to Larvotto and Monte-Carlo while being free of crowds during high season. With several grocery stores, shops, local restaurants, and elevators down to the beach, it is a strong choice for family life.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Three-bedroom apartments are available across most districts with reasonable regularity. Four and five-bedroom apartments are not as common, and families with larger space requirements should start their search early and work with a broker who has access to off-market stock.

Considerably. Teenagers in Monaco can navigate the Principality independently on foot or by public bus in a way that would not be realistic in Geneva, London or Paris. The scale removes the logistical dependency on parental transport that dominates family life in larger cities, which most families find changes the dynamic of daily life in ways they did not fully anticipate before the move.

Yes, and the range is broader than Monaco’s size would suggest. The Government invests heavily in youth sport and cultural programmes. Swimming, sailing, tennis, football, gymnastics and martial arts are all available through both school and independent programmes. The Yacht Club de Monaco runs youth sailing from an early age, which is popular with families who arrive with or develop an interest in sailing. The Monte-Carlo Country Club offers junior tennis. Availability and registration timelines vary and families should research specific programmes before arriving.
